The gentlest starting point for hand rehabilitation. The CanDo Hand Exercise Grips in Yellow (X-Easy, 3 lbs) are the lightest level in the CanDo ergonomic grip sequence — designed for patients in the earliest stages of hand rehabilitation, including post-stroke recovery, nerve injury, and prolonged immobilization where grip strength is severely limited. The ergonomic grip shape fits comfortably in the hand for controlled, consistent squeezing exercises, and the progressive CanDo resistance sequence provides a clear, structured path from the earliest recovery through advanced athletic performance. Sold in pairs.
How does the CanDo resistance sequence work?
The CanDo grip sequence uses color coding to indicate resistance level, with the force requirement doubling at each step — from Yellow (X-Easy, 3 lbs, lightest) through Red (Easy, 6 lbs), Green, Blue, and Black (X-Hard, 48 lbs, heaviest). This progressive structure allows therapists and patients to advance resistance in a controlled, measurable way as grip strength improves. Yellow is the entry point of the sequence and is appropriate for patients with very limited or no functional grip strength.
Who should start with the Yellow level?
Yellow (X-Easy, 3 lbs) is designed for patients in the earliest stages of rehabilitation — including those recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, peripheral nerve injury, severe arthritis, or extended periods of hand immobilization. If you can barely close your hand against resistance or are just beginning to regain voluntary hand movement, Yellow is the appropriate starting point. Always follow your occupational therapist’s or physical therapist’s recommendation for the correct starting level based on your strength assessment and diagnosis.
How do I use hand exercise grips correctly?
Hold one grip in each hand with the ergonomic shape fitting naturally in your palm. Squeeze the grip fully, hold for 2–3 seconds, then slowly release. Perform the number of repetitions and sets prescribed by your therapist. Avoid gripping so hard that you experience pain — some muscle fatigue is normal, but sharp or joint pain is a signal to stop and consult your therapist. Use both hands equally unless your therapist has specified unilateral training for one-sided weakness.
Can I purchase other resistance levels separately?
Yes. The CanDo hand exercise grips are available in all five resistance levels (Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, and Black) and are sold in pairs at each level. Check our store for the full CanDo grip sequence to build a complete progressive set or to find the next resistance level when you are ready to advance.
