The Johnson & Johnson Specialist Stockinet is a premium orthopedic tubular stockinette used as the initial undercast layer beneath cast padding and casting materials. Made from soft, high-grade unbleached knitted cotton, it provides a smooth, comfortable barrier between the skin and the casting system. The tubular construction stretches to conform to the limb and is folded back over the cast edges at the end of the application to create a clean, finished border. The 2" width is appropriate for smaller limbs, wrists, hands, and pediatric applications. 25-yard roll in a dispensing box.
What is the role of stockinette in a casting application?
Stockinette is applied directly over the skin as the first layer of the casting system, before cast padding and casting material. It serves as a smooth, soft barrier that protects the skin from the rougher texture of cast padding and prevents the padding from adhering directly to skin hair. The tubular stockinette is applied longer than the intended cast length, and the excess at each end is folded back over the finished cast edges after the casting material is applied, creating a smooth, padded border that prevents the raw cast edge from irritating the skin.
Why is unbleached cotton used for orthopedic stockinette?
Unbleached cotton retains its natural fiber structure without the chemical processing involved in bleaching, which can reduce fiber strength and leave residual chemicals in the fabric. For a material applied directly against the skin during casting, unbleached cotton provides a soft, natural surface that is less likely to cause skin irritation compared to chemically processed alternatives. The knitted construction adds stretch and conformability, allowing the stockinette to fit smoothly over the limb without bunching or creating pressure ridges under the cast.
Is the 2" width appropriate for adult casting applications?
The 2" width is primarily used for smaller limb applications including adult wrists, hands, fingers, and forearms, as well as pediatric lower extremity casting. For adult lower extremity casting (short leg cast, long leg cast), wider stockinette in 3", 4", or 6" widths is typically used. Stock multiple widths to cover the full range of casting applications in your facility. If you need a wider stockinette for adult lower extremity use, search for the Specialist Stockinet in 3" or larger widths.
How do I use the dispensing box?
The dispensing box has an opening that allows the stockinette to be pulled out in a controlled manner during application. Feed the end of the stockinette through the opening and pull the required length for the casting application. The box keeps the remaining roll clean and contained between uses. Store the box in a clean, dry location away from moisture, which can affect the cotton fibers and the integrity of the stockinette during casting.
