The SafeHip Hip Protector Open Model is designed for individuals with incontinence who need hip protection without the barrier that a standard closed-crotch garment creates during toileting. The open crotch design provides easy access when toileting, eliminating the need to fully remove the garment — which is particularly important for users with limited mobility or those who require caregiver assistance. Made from a comfortable 71% cotton, 25% polyester, and 4% elastin blend that stretches for a secure fit and is fully machine washable for easy care. X-Large size fits a hip measurement of 43" to 55".
What is the Open Model and how is it different from a standard hip protector?
The Open Model has an open crotch design, meaning the garment does not have a closed seam between the legs. This allows the user to toilet without removing the hip protector entirely — the garment stays in place over the hips while the open crotch provides access. A standard closed-crotch hip protector must be pulled down completely for toileting, which can be difficult or time-consuming for users with limited mobility, balance issues, or those who require caregiver assistance. The Open Model is specifically designed for users with incontinence or those who toilet frequently and need a more practical garment for daily wear.
How does a hip protector help prevent hip fractures?
Hip protectors are garments with energy-absorbing or energy-shunting pads positioned over the greater trochanter — the bony prominence on the outer hip that is the most common fracture site in a fall. When a fall occurs, the pad absorbs or redirects the impact energy away from the bone, reducing the force transmitted to the hip. Consistent wear is the key factor — the protector must be on at the time of the fall to be effective. The Open Model's design encourages consistent wear by making toileting easier, which reduces the likelihood that the user will remove the garment and not replace it.
How do I measure for the correct size?
Measure the hip circumference at the widest point — typically around the greater trochanter and buttocks. The X-Large size fits a hip measurement of 43" to 55". If the measurement falls at the lower end of the X-Large range, the Large size may provide a better fit — confirm the Large size range before ordering. A properly fitted hip protector should sit securely over the greater trochanter without shifting during normal movement and daily activities.
How is the garment washed?
The SafeHip Open Model is machine washable. Follow the care label instructions for washing temperature and drying method. Avoid high heat drying, which can degrade the protective pad material and the elastin in the fabric over time. Inspect the pads and garment after each wash for signs of wear, compression, or damage to the protective material, and replace when the pads no longer provide adequate cushioning. In facility settings, write the resident's name on the garment before laundering to ensure it is returned to the correct individual.
