Continuous alternating pressure relief for wheelchair users — at home and on the go. This A.P.P. (Alternating Pressure Pad) wheelchair cushion and pump system uses individual air bladders that alternate every 10 minutes to create a dynamic, pressure-relieving seating surface that reduces the risk of pressure-related discomfort during extended wheelchair use. The portable AC/DC pump allows the user to remain mobile while maintaining continuous pressure relief, and the rechargeable battery backup provides more than 7 hours of use per charge. A car adapter is included for vehicle use. The zippered, anti-microbial stretch-knit cover is non-skid and meets California Tech Bulletin #117 fire retardancy standards.
This item ships directly from the manufacturer. Please allow 5–7 business days for processing before shipment.
How does an alternating pressure cushion work differently from a standard foam or gel cushion?
A standard foam or gel cushion provides static pressure redistribution — it spreads the user’s weight across a larger surface area to reduce peak pressure at any single point. An alternating pressure cushion goes further by actively cycling pressure on and off across different zones of the cushion every 10 minutes. This cycling mimics the natural weight shifting that ambulatory individuals do unconsciously, promoting blood flow to tissues that would otherwise remain under sustained pressure. For users who cannot independently shift their weight, alternating pressure systems provide a level of pressure relief that static cushions cannot replicate.
What does the rechargeable battery backup allow the user to do?
The rechargeable battery backup allows the pump to continue operating for more than 7 hours without being plugged into an AC outlet. This means the user can leave home, attend appointments, travel in a vehicle (using the included car adapter), or spend time in locations without accessible power outlets while maintaining continuous alternating pressure relief. Without a battery backup, an alternating pressure system would only function when plugged in, severely limiting the user’s mobility. The battery should be charged regularly to ensure it is ready when needed.
How do I know if this cushion will fit my wheelchair?
This cushion measures 18" wide x 16" deep x 3.25" high. To confirm fit, measure your wheelchair seat from side to side (width) and from the front edge to the back upholstery (depth). The cushion should fit within the seat frame without overhanging the sides significantly. A cushion that is too wide may interfere with the armrests or wheels; too narrow may not provide full coverage. The 3.25" height will raise the user’s seated position by approximately that amount — confirm that armrest and footrest heights can be adjusted accordingly if needed.
How do I care for the cover?
The zippered stretch-knit cover is removable for cleaning. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions on the cover label — most stretch-knit covers can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cool water and air dried. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, which can degrade the anti-microbial treatment and elastic fibers. Ensure the cover is completely dry before replacing it on the cushion. The air bladder cushion itself should be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant if needed — do not submerge in water.
