Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 512 Hz a commonly used frequency for clinical tuning forks?
The 512 Hz frequency falls within the range relevant to both auditory screening and sensory assessment. It is high enough to minimize tactile vibration felt through the handle while still being audible for standard hearing screening tests.

What is the difference between a tuning fork with weights and one without?
Weights attached to the tines lower the vibration frequency and increase the duration of vibration after striking. A fork without weights vibrates at its pure, unmodified frequency (512 Hz in this case) and is the standard configuration for most clinical assessments. Weighted forks are used for specific applications where a lower effective frequency or longer vibration duration is needed.

How do I care for a tuning fork?
Store the tuning fork in a protective case or pouch to prevent damage to the tines. Avoid dropping the fork or striking it against hard surfaces, as this can alter the vibration frequency or damage the tines. Clean with a mild disinfectant wipe as needed. Do not autoclave or expose to high heat, as this can affect the metal and alter frequency accuracy.

Is this fork suitable for both auditory and sensory assessment?
Yes. The 512 Hz frequency is used for both auditory screening and sensory assessment in clinical and educational settings.
