Foam rollers are one of the most versatile tools in physical therapy and rehabilitation — used for positioning, balance training, postural and muscle re-education, spinal stabilization, body awareness and coordination, and ranging and strengthening activities. The Cando Round Foam Roller in 4" x 12" is the smaller-diameter option in the Cando progressive roller sequence, making it the easier starting point for users who are beginning balance and stabilization work or who need a lower challenge level before progressing to a larger diameter roller. White ethefoam construction is strong enough to support large adults and active children without compressing or losing shape over time. The 12" length provides a stable base for a range of exercises in both clinical and home settings.
What is the difference between a 4" and a larger diameter foam roller?
The diameter of a round foam roller directly affects the difficulty of balance and stabilization exercises performed on it. A smaller diameter roller — such as this 4" roller — has a narrower contact surface with the floor, which creates a more stable base and a lower balance challenge. A larger diameter roller has a rounder profile that rocks more easily, creating a greater balance challenge and requiring more active stabilization from the user. In a progressive exercise sequence, users typically start with a smaller diameter roller and advance to larger diameters as their balance, coordination, and core strength improve.
What is ethefoam and how durable is it?
Ethefoam is a closed-cell polyethylene foam that is significantly denser and more durable than the open-cell foam used in lower-quality foam rollers. Closed-cell foam does not absorb moisture, resists compression over time, and maintains its shape and firmness through repeated use by large adults and active children. This makes ethefoam rollers more appropriate for clinical settings and high-use environments than open-cell foam rollers, which tend to compress and lose their shape with regular use. The white color is standard for Cando ethefoam rollers.
What exercises can be done with a 4" x 12" foam roller?
The 4" x 12" roller is used for a wide range of physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises. For positioning, it can be placed under the lumbar spine, knees, or ankles to support the body in a specific position during treatment. For balance and coordination, the user can sit, kneel, or place a limb on the roller and perform controlled movements that challenge stability. For postural and muscle re-education, the roller provides proprioceptive feedback that helps the user develop awareness of body position and alignment. For strengthening, the unstable surface of the roller increases the demand on stabilizing muscles during exercises performed on or with the roller.
How do I clean and store the foam roller?
Wipe the roller with a damp cloth and mild soap or a diluted disinfectant solution after use. The closed-cell ethefoam does not absorb moisture, so the surface can be wiped clean without the foam retaining liquid. Allow to air dry completely before storing. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can degrade foam over time. Do not store heavy objects on top of the roller, which could cause permanent compression of the foam surface.
