Clinical-grade post-operative protection sized for children. The Darco Med-Surg Pediatric Shoe brings the same professional post-operative features of the adult Med-Surg line to children’s sizes 12–1. Designed for foot and toe surgery recovery in pediatric patients, it features a square-toe bumper for K-wire protection, a rocker sole that reduces plantar pressure on the forefoot and heel by over 25%, MetaShank™ protection under the metatarsal heads, and a removable double-padded insole that is fully customizable. The ankle strap eliminates heel slippage for a secure fit during recovery. Color: Black.

What is the square-toe bumper and why is it important for K-wires?
K-wires (Kirschner wires) are thin metal pins used in pediatric foot surgery to stabilize bones during healing. They often protrude slightly from the tip of the toe while in place. The square-toe design of the Med-Surg shoe creates a rigid protective bumper around the front of the shoe that prevents the K-wire tips from being struck or bent by contact with objects during normal activity — a critical safety feature during the weeks the wires remain in place before removal.
How does the rocker sole reduce pressure?
The rocker sole has a curved profile that shifts the point of ground contact away from the forefoot and heel during the walking cycle. Instead of the foot rolling forward over the metatarsal heads and toes — which creates peak pressure at the surgical site — the rocker sole transfers that load to the midfoot, reducing plantar pressure on the forefoot and heel by over 25%. This allows the child to walk with a more natural gait while protecting the surgical site from excessive loading during recovery.
How do I select the correct size for my child?
This shoe fits children’s shoe sizes 12–1 (US). Measure your child’s foot length or use their current shoe size as a guide. The shoe is designed to accommodate some post-operative swelling and dressings, so the pre-surgery shoe size is the appropriate starting point. If your child has significant swelling or bulky dressings, the shoe’s accommodating design should still provide a comfortable fit. Always follow your child’s surgeon or orthotist’s guidance on footwear sizing as part of the post-operative protocol.
Can the insole be modified for off-loading?
Yes. The removable double-padded insole can be trimmed, cut, or modified to create targeted pressure relief zones under specific areas of the foot — useful when a particular surgical site or wound needs to be off-loaded during healing. The insole can also be removed entirely to accommodate additional dressings or a custom orthotic insert. This customizability makes the Med-Surg shoe adaptable to a wide range of post-operative protocols without requiring a different shoe.
