Lightweight, durable, and ready to go right out of the box. The Drive Medical Expedition transport chair weighs just 19 lbs while supporting up to 300 lbs — making it one of the lightest full-featured transport chairs available. The powder-coated aluminum frame is available in Red and Blue, and the chair comes fully assembled: just pop open, flip up the back, and attach the footrest. A handy lever on the chair back makes folding easy for caregivers and users with limited upper body strength or dexterity. Flat-free 12" rear wheels provide a stable ride over varied terrain, thresholds, and curbs without the risk of a flat. Seatbelt and hand brakes included. Limited lifetime warranty.
What are flat-free wheels and why are they better for transport chairs?
Flat-free wheels are solid or foam-filled tires that cannot go flat — unlike pneumatic (air-filled) tires, they require no inflation and will never leave you stranded with a flat tire. For a transport chair used outdoors, on uneven surfaces, or over thresholds and curbs, flat-free wheels provide a consistently stable ride without maintenance. The trade-off is a slightly firmer ride compared to pneumatic tires, but for most transport chair users the reliability and zero-maintenance benefit outweighs the difference in ride quality.
What are loop locks and how do they work?
Loop locks (also called companion locks or caregiver locks) are brake levers mounted at the push handle level at the rear of the chair, where the caregiver stands. They allow the caregiver to engage and release the wheel locks without bending down to reach the standard wheel locks near the seat. This is particularly useful when the caregiver needs to quickly secure the chair during transfers or on inclines. The Expedition also includes standard hand brakes for additional braking control during transport.
How does the folding mechanism work?
The Expedition features a lever on the chair back that allows the back to fold down flat with minimal effort — designed specifically for users and caregivers with limited upper body strength or dexterity. Once the back is folded, the seat folds up using the standard cross-brace fold. The chair comes fully assembled, so no setup is required before first use — pop open the frame, flip up the back, and attach the footrest. When folded, the chair is compact enough to fit in most car trunks and storage spaces.
Is this chair also available in Blue?
Yes. The Expedition Aluminum Transport Chair is available in both Red and Blue frame colors. The specifications and features are identical across both colors — only the frame color differs. If you need the Blue version, search for the Expedition transport chair in Blue or contact us and we can point you to the correct listing.
