Washing a bedridden patient's hair is one of the more logistically challenging personal care tasks for home caregivers and clinical staff — and the EZ-Shampoo Inflatable Hair Washing Basin makes it manageable. The basin inflates quickly to a generous 28" W x 24" L x 6" D, providing enough space to position the patient's head comfortably while containing water and shampoo during the wash. Heavy-duty vinyl construction is durable and easy to wipe clean between uses. The included 2-foot drain hose with stopper allows water to be drained directly into a bucket or sink without lifting or tilting the basin, which is particularly important when the patient cannot be repositioned. Deflates and folds compactly for storage when not in use.
How do I set up and use the basin for in-bed hair washing?
Inflate the basin fully using the valve — it should be firm enough to hold its shape and contain water without collapsing. Position the basin under the patient's head while they are lying flat, with the patient's neck resting in the curved opening at the top of the basin. Insert the drain hose stopper to close the drain before adding water. Pour warm water over the patient's hair to wet it, apply shampoo, lather, and rinse by pouring water over the hair and into the basin. When finished, remove the stopper and direct the drain hose into a bucket or sink to drain the water without moving the basin or the patient.
How much water does the basin hold?
The basin's 28" x 24" x 6" inflated dimensions provide a generous capacity for in-bed hair washing. The exact water volume depends on how fully the basin is inflated and how the patient's head is positioned within it. For most in-bed hair washing sessions, the basin provides sufficient capacity for wetting, shampooing, and rinsing without needing to drain and refill mid-wash. Have a pitcher of warm water ready to pour during the wash rather than relying on a running tap, which is typically not accessible at the bedside.
How is the basin cleaned between uses?
After draining, wipe the interior of the basin with a damp cloth and mild soap or a gentle disinfectant solution. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before deflating and storing. Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners that could degrade the vinyl material. In clinical settings, follow your facility's infection control protocols for cleaning and disinfecting reusable patient care equipment between patients.
Can the basin be used for patients who cannot lie flat?
The basin is designed for use with patients in a lying or semi-reclined position. For patients who must remain in a more upright position, the basin may not provide an adequate seal around the neck and shoulders to contain water effectively. In those cases, a different hair washing method — such as a no-rinse shampoo cap or a shower chair with a handheld showerhead — may be more appropriate. Consult your occupational therapist or care coordinator for guidance on the most suitable hair washing method for your patient's specific positioning limitations.
