Gel comfort and foam support in a lightweight, versatile wheelchair cushion. The Drive Gel-U-Seat Lite combines a unique dual-chambered gel bladder with a supportive foam base to deliver pressure redistribution and cooling comfort for a wide range of wheelchair users. The dual-chambered design keeps the pelvis in consistent contact with the pressure-redistributing gel, preventing the user from bottoming out through the gel layer and losing the cushioning benefit during extended sitting. The fluid-resistant, low-shear nylon cover reduces friction during transfers and wipes clean easily. The cover is zippered and removable for laundering. A durable vinyl bottom protects the foam base, and 12 tie straps secure the cushion firmly to the wheelchair frame. Meets California flammability standard TB117.
What does “dual-chambered gel bladder” mean and why is it better than a single gel layer?
A single gel layer can allow the user to compress the gel completely during prolonged sitting — a phenomenon called bottoming out — where the gel is fully displaced and the user is effectively sitting on the foam base with no gel cushioning. A dual-chambered gel bladder divides the gel into two separate compartments, which limits lateral gel displacement and maintains consistent gel contact under the pelvis even during extended sitting. This preserves the pressure-redistributing benefit of the gel throughout the day rather than only at the beginning of a sitting session.
What does “low-shear” cover mean and why does it matter for transfers?
Shear force occurs when the skin moves in one direction while the underlying tissue moves in another — a common cause of skin breakdown during transfers in and out of the wheelchair. A low-shear cover material has a smooth surface that reduces friction between the cover and the user’s clothing during lateral movement, minimizing the shear forces applied to the skin during transfers. For users who transfer frequently or who have fragile skin, a low-shear cover is an important feature for skin integrity protection.
How do I choose the right cushion size for my wheelchair?
Measure the width of your wheelchair seat from armrest to armrest (inside measurement) and the seat depth from the front edge to the backrest. Choose a cushion that matches or is slightly smaller than your seat dimensions — a cushion that is too wide will bunch against the armrests and one that is too narrow will not provide full support. This cushion is 20" wide × 16" deep, suitable for most standard adult wheelchair seat widths.
How do I clean and maintain this cushion?
Unzip and remove the nylon cover and machine wash according to the care label instructions. Allow to air dry fully before replacing on the cushion. The vinyl bottom and gel/foam core can be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant if needed — do not submerge the foam or gel components in water. Inspect the gel bladder periodically for signs of leakage or deformation and replace the cushion if the gel layer is compromised.
