What is a surge overflow gurney and when is it used?
A surge overflow gurney is a supplemental patient bed designed for use when a hospital or medical facility exceeds its normal patient capacity — such as during a mass casualty incident, pandemic surge, natural disaster, or other large-scale emergency. Standard hospital beds are fixed infrastructure; surge gurneys are lightweight, easy-assembly units that can be rapidly deployed in overflow areas such as hallways, gymnasiums, or temporary field hospitals to expand patient care capacity quickly. This gurney’s PVC construction makes it easy to transport, assemble, and decontaminate between uses.
What is the color triage information system?
The color triage system is a standardized method used in mass casualty and disaster medicine to rapidly classify patients by the severity of their condition and the urgency of treatment needed. Colors typically correspond to: Red (immediate — life-threatening, requires immediate treatment), Yellow (delayed — serious but stable), Green (minor — walking wounded), and Black (expectant or deceased). The color triage information system built into this gurney allows medical personnel to visually identify a patient’s triage status at a glance, supporting organized patient flow and resource allocation in high-volume emergency scenarios.
Is a bariatric version available?
Yes. A bariatric model is available upon request for patients exceeding the standard 490 lb weight capacity. Contact us with your requirements and we can provide information on the bariatric model specifications and pricing. The standard model’s 490 lb capacity already accommodates a wide range of patients, but the bariatric option is available for facilities that require higher weight capacity for their patient population.
How does the mesh sling support decontamination?
The mesh sling serves as the patient support surface and is designed for easy removal and cleaning between patients. In surge and mass casualty scenarios, rapid decontamination of patient surfaces is critical for infection control and, in hazmat or chemical exposure events, for preventing cross-contamination between patients. The mesh construction allows fluids to drain through rather than pool, and the sling can be removed, cleaned, and disinfected or replaced more easily than a solid mattress surface. This makes the gurney practical for high-turnover surge environments where standard mattress cleaning protocols may not be feasible.
