What is the difference between hand-to-foot and foot-to-foot body composition measurement?
Foot-to-foot scales send a bioelectrical signal only through the lower body (legs and pelvis), which can underestimate body fat in the upper body. Hand-to-foot measurement sends the signal through the entire body — from the hand sensors through the torso and down through the feet — providing a more complete and accurate assessment of whole-body composition. Omron’s hand-to-foot technology is the same approach used in many clinical body composition analyzers.
How accurate is bioelectrical impedance for body fat measurement?
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a widely used and clinically validated method for estimating body composition. Accuracy is best when measurements are taken consistently — at the same time of day, under the same hydration conditions, and before eating. Hydration level significantly affects readings, so measurements taken after exercise, alcohol consumption, or illness may be less accurate. For tracking trends over time, BIA is highly effective when used consistently.
Can multiple family members use this monitor?
Yes. The HBF514C supports up to 4 individual user profiles, each storing up to 90 days of measurement history. Each user’s profile stores their personal data (age, height, gender, activity level) so the monitor can calculate personalized metrics for each person.
What is visceral fat and why does it matter?
Visceral fat is the fat stored around internal organs in the abdominal cavity. Unlike subcutaneous fat (the fat under the skin), visceral fat is strongly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Monitoring visceral fat level — not just overall body fat percentage — provides a more clinically meaningful picture of metabolic health risk.
