Two chairs in one — without the extra cost or storage space. The Drive Medical Poly-Fly converts between a self-propelled wheelchair and a caregiver-pushed transport chair in seconds using quick-release 24" rear wheels. With the wheels on, the user can self-propel independently. With the wheels removed, a caregiver can push the chair in a compact transport configuration. The lightweight all-aluminum frame weighs just 34 lbs with wheels, and the fold-down back makes storage and vehicle transport straightforward. Swing-away composite footrests with heel loops allow easy transfers. Anti-tippers included for added stability. Limited lifetime warranty.
How does the conversion between wheelchair and transport chair work?
The Poly-Fly uses quick-release 24" rear wheels that can be removed and reattached without tools in seconds. With the 24" wheels installed, the chair functions as a standard self-propelled wheelchair — the user can reach the large rear wheels and propel themselves independently. With the 24" wheels removed, the chair sits lower on the 8" front casters and is pushed by a caregiver in transport mode. The dual wheel lock system provides dedicated braking for both configurations. No tools or complicated adjustments are required to switch between modes.
What is the difference between a transport chair and a standard wheelchair?
A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels (typically 24") that the user can grip and push to self-propel. A transport chair has small wheels on all four corners and is designed to be pushed by a caregiver — the user cannot self-propel. Transport chairs are lighter and more compact but require a caregiver for movement. The Poly-Fly eliminates the need to choose between the two by combining both functions in a single frame, making it ideal for users whose mobility needs vary by situation.
How do the swing-away footrests work and why do they matter for transfers?
The swing-away footrests pivot outward to the side of the chair, clearing the front of the seat for a straight-on transfer — allowing the user to stand up or sit down without stepping over the footrest. This is particularly important for users with limited leg strength or balance, and for safe transfers from bed, toilet, or car seat. The composite footplates with heel loops keep the feet positioned correctly during use and prevent the feet from sliding off the footrest.
How does the Poly-Fly fold for storage and transport?
The chair folds in two ways: the seat folds up using the standard cross-brace fold common to most folding wheelchairs, and the back folds down flat for an even more compact profile. The quick-release 24" wheels can also be removed to reduce the overall width and weight for loading into a vehicle. When folded with wheels removed, the chair is significantly more compact than a standard folding wheelchair, making it practical for smaller vehicles and tight storage spaces.
