All the odor-eliminating power of HaloShield — now with tuck-in flaps that keep the pad exactly where it needs to be. The Salk HaloShield Underpad with Flaps features 18" tuck-in flaps that secure the pad firmly under the mattress, preventing it from bunching, shifting, or sliding during repositioning or movement in bed. This is the key advantage over a standard flat underpad — the pad stays in position through the night and through patient turns, reducing the need for constant readjustment by caregivers.
The HaloShield antimicrobial technology kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria within 10 minutes of contact, eliminating the source of urine odor rather than simply absorbing it. The antimicrobial protection is renewed with every chlorine bleach wash, maintaining effectiveness throughout the life of the pad. The ultrasoft moisture-wicking top layer keeps skin dry, the super absorbent inner layer traps fluids quickly, and the 100% waterproof backing protects the mattress and bedding. Non-irritating for sensitive skin. Reusable and more economical than disposables.
What do the tuck-in flaps do and why do they matter?
The 18" tuck-in flaps extend beyond the main pad surface and are tucked under the mattress on each side. This anchors the pad in place so it cannot shift, bunch, or slide when the patient moves, is repositioned, or turns in bed. For caregivers managing bed-bound or limited-mobility patients, a pad that stays in position significantly reduces the time spent readjusting the pad and ensures consistent protection throughout the night. Standard flat underpads without flaps frequently migrate out of position, leaving the patient and bedding unprotected.
How does HaloShield antimicrobial technology work?
HaloShield is an antimicrobial treatment built into the fabric of the underpad. When bacteria come into contact with the treated surface, the technology disrupts the bacteria’s cell structure and kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria within 10 minutes. Unlike standard underpads that simply absorb urine and allow bacteria to proliferate — producing the characteristic ammonia odor — HaloShield actively kills the bacteria responsible for odor at the source.
Does the antimicrobial protection wear out over time?
No. The antimicrobial protection is renewed with every wash in chlorine bleach. Standard bleach laundering — already common practice for incontinence products — simultaneously cleans the pad and restores the HaloShield protection. The pad maintains its odor-killing effectiveness throughout its usable life as long as it is washed with bleach. Do not use fabric softener, as it can coat the moisture-wicking fibers and reduce absorbency.
How is this different from the standard HaloShield underpad without flaps?
The core HaloShield antimicrobial technology, absorbency, and waterproof protection are identical between this pad and the standard flat version. The difference is the 18" tuck-in flaps and the larger overall size (32" × 36" vs. 23" × 36"). The flap version is the better choice for bed use where pad migration is a concern. The flat version (SK1990H) is better suited for chair use or situations where flaps are not practical.
