The Slide On Over Transfer Board helps aid safe patient transfer between a wheelchair, bed, chair, or commode. Rounded corners, tapered ends, and a smooth finish provide an easy, comfortable transfer experience. Available in solid and two-cutout styles across five size options to accommodate a range of patient needs.
What is the difference between the solid board and the two-cutout board?
The solid board is a flat hardwood panel with no openings — it provides a continuous sliding surface and is the standard choice for most transfers. The two-cutout board has two open hand-grip cutouts that allow the patient or caregiver to grip the board more easily during positioning and transfer. The cutout version is particularly useful when the patient needs to reposition the board mid-transfer or when the caregiver needs a secure hold to guide the patient across. Both styles have the same weight capacity, dimensions, and tapered end design.
How do I choose the right size?
The board needs to bridge the gap between the two surfaces being transferred between — wheelchair seat to bed, for example. A longer board (30" or 32") provides more overlap on each surface and is better for wider gaps or larger patients who need more sliding room. A wider board (10") provides a broader sliding surface for patients who need more lateral stability during the transfer. When in doubt, choose a longer board — excess length is easier to manage than a board that doesn’t reach both surfaces securely.
Do I need a sliding sheet or transfer belt with this board?
The board’s smooth hardwood finish is designed to allow sliding with minimal friction. For patients with limited upper body strength or significant skin sensitivity, a transfer (sliding) sheet placed on top of the board can further reduce friction and make the transfer easier and more comfortable. A gait belt or transfer belt is recommended for caregivers assisting patients who cannot transfer independently, to provide a secure hold during the transfer without gripping clothing.
How do I position the transfer board correctly?
Place one end of the board under the patient’s thigh on the side closest to the destination surface, and rest the other end on the destination surface (bed, chair, commode). The board should bridge both surfaces with secure overlap on each end — at least 3–4" on each side. The tapered ends (1/8" thickness) create a smooth ramp onto each surface to minimize the bump during transfer. The patient then slides across the board in a series of small, controlled movements rather than one continuous slide.
