Sof-Rol Cast Padding is a 100% surgical grade rayon padding roll used as an undercast layer beneath plaster and fiberglass casting materials. The soft, conformable rayon construction provides a comfortable protective layer between the cast material and the patient's skin, cushioning bony prominences and reducing the risk of pressure sores and skin breakdown during the casting period. 4" width x 4 yards per roll. Box of 12 rolls.
What is the role of cast padding in a casting application?
Cast padding is applied directly over the skin before the casting material (plaster or fiberglass) is applied. It serves two primary functions: protecting the skin from the hard cast shell by providing a soft cushioning layer, and protecting bony prominences such as the malleoli, heel, and radial styloid from pressure sores that can develop when a rigid cast presses directly against a bony area. Adequate padding thickness at bony prominences is a critical step in preventing cast complications. The padding also absorbs minor moisture and allows for slight swelling in the early post-injury period.
Why is surgical grade rayon used for cast padding?
Surgical grade rayon is soft, highly conformable, and has good moisture absorption properties. Its conformability allows it to wrap smoothly around the contours of the limb and over bony prominences without creating pressure ridges or uneven thickness. Rayon padding is also lint-free compared to cotton batting, which reduces the risk of fibers becoming embedded in the cast material. The surgical grade designation indicates the material meets purity and quality standards appropriate for use in clinical wound and casting applications.
How many layers of padding should be applied?
The number of padding layers depends on the clinical application, the patient's anatomy, and the casting protocol used by the clinician. Standard practice typically involves 2 to 3 layers of padding over the general limb surface, with additional layers at bony prominences. Specific padding protocols vary by institution and clinician preference. Always follow your facility's casting protocol and the casting material manufacturer's instructions for padding thickness recommendations.
Is the 4" width appropriate for all casting applications?
The 4" width is a standard size suitable for most adult lower extremity casting applications including short leg casts, long leg casts, and ankle splints. For upper extremity applications such as short arm casts and wrist splints, a 2" or 3" width is typically used for the forearm and wrist, while 4" may be used for the upper arm. For pediatric casting, narrower widths are generally preferred. Stock multiple widths to cover the full range of casting applications in your facility.
