The Blue Jay Stop Your Bending Deluxe Hip Kit provides everything needed to maintain independence and protect hip precautions during recovery from hip replacement or lower extremity surgery. This 7-piece kit includes the tools most frequently recommended by occupational therapists to help patients dress, bathe, and move safely without bending past 90 degrees or straining the new joint. Two pairs of elastic shoelaces — white and black — are included so shoes can be slipped on and off without tying, eliminating one more task that requires bending or fine motor effort during recovery.
What are hip precautions and why does this kit help?
Hip precautions are movement restrictions prescribed after hip replacement surgery to protect the new joint while it heals. They typically include avoiding bending the hip past 90 degrees, crossing the legs, and rotating the foot inward. Each tool in this kit is designed to help you perform daily tasks — dressing, bathing, picking up items, putting on shoes — while staying within these restrictions. The reacher eliminates bending to the floor, the sock aid puts on socks without forward bending, the dressing stick manages clothing without reaching down, the shoehorn slides shoes on without bending, the figure-8 sponge reaches the lower legs for bathing, and the elastic shoelaces eliminate the need to tie shoes entirely.
How do elastic shoelaces work and why are two pairs included?
Elastic shoelaces replace standard laces in any lace-up shoe, converting it to a slip-on that stretches to accommodate the foot during entry and holds snugly during wear. They are installed once and left in the shoe permanently — no tying or untying required. Two pairs are included — one white and one black — so the patient can outfit both a casual shoe and a dress or darker shoe without purchasing additional laces. This is particularly useful during recovery when the patient may be wearing different shoes for different activities or settings.
How does the sock aid work?
The formed sock aid is a rigid plastic shell with fabric cords attached. Place your sock over the shell, lower it to the floor using the cords, slide your foot in, and pull the cords to bring the sock up your leg — all without bending forward. It works with most standard socks and some compression stockings. Your occupational therapist will typically demonstrate the correct technique during your pre-discharge training session.
What is the difference between this 7-piece kit and the 5-piece hip kit?
The 7-piece Deluxe Hip Kit adds two pairs of elastic shoelaces (white and black) and uses a figure-8 long handle sponge instead of a round sponge, compared to the 5-piece kit. The elastic shoelaces address the shoe-tying task that the 5-piece kit does not cover, making the 7-piece kit a more complete solution for patients who wear lace-up shoes. The 5-piece kit includes a 32" reacher while this kit includes a 26" reacher. Both kits cover the core dressing and bathing ADL tasks required for hip precaution compliance.
