Voldyne Incentive Spirometer, 2500 mL, Volumetric Exerciser

The Voldyne Incentive Spirometer is a volumetric breathing exerciser designed to encourage patients to take slow, deep breaths that expand the lungs and help prevent post-operative pulmonary complications such as atelectasis and pneumonia. The 2500 mL capacity accommodates large inspired volumes for a wide range of adult patients. A smiley face flow indicator and bright green flow indicator provide clear visual targets that motivate patients and make it easy to see results during each breath. The expandable and collapsible tube allows patients to find a comfortable position during treatment, and the ergonomic swivel mouthpiece helps create a tight seal for accurate volume measurement.

Ideal For

Post-operative patients recovering from abdominal, thoracic, or cardiac surgery who need to perform regular lung expansion exercises to prevent atelectasis and reduce the risk of post-surgical pneumonia will find the Voldyne 2500 mL a clear visual feedback option suited for most adult inspired volumes. Patients managing COPD, asthma, or other chronic respiratory conditions who require regular breathing exercises to maintain lung function will benefit from the smiley face flow indicator and green volume indicator during each session. Hospital respiratory therapy departments and home health providers prescribing incentive spirometry as part of a discharge care plan will find the 2500 mL capacity appropriate for most adult patients. Clinicians and caregivers supporting patients through respiratory rehabilitation will appreciate the ergonomic swivel mouthpiece and collapsible tubing that make the device comfortable and easy to use in a variety of positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an incentive spirometer and why is it used after surgery?
An incentive spirometer is a breathing exercise device that encourages patients to take slow, sustained deep breaths by providing visual feedback on the volume of air inhaled. After surgery, patients tend to breathe shallowly due to pain and reduced mobility, which can cause small airways and air sacs to collapse — a condition called atelectasis. Regular use of an incentive spirometer helps keep the lungs fully expanded and reduces this risk. Most post-operative protocols recommend 10 slow, deep breaths every 1 to 2 hours while awake.

What does the flow indicator (smiley face) tell me?
The flow indicator shows the rate at which you are inhaling. The goal of incentive spirometry is a slow, sustained inhalation, not a fast, forceful breath. The smiley face indicator provides a visual target for the desired inhalation flow rate, and staying within the target zone ensures the breath is deep and sustained enough to fully expand the lower lobes of the lungs.

How do I use the spirometer correctly?
Sit upright or as upright as possible, hold the spirometer level, and exhale normally. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, create a tight seal with your lips, and inhale slowly and deeply to raise the indicator to your target volume. Hold the breath for 3 to 5 seconds, exhale slowly, rest for a few breaths, and repeat. Aim for 10 repetitions every 1 to 2 hours while awake, or as directed by your healthcare provider.

Is this spirometer reusable or single-use?
Incentive spirometers are generally intended for single-patient use and should not be shared between patients due to infection control concerns. For home use after discharge, the spirometer is typically sent home with the patient for continued use during recovery. Replace the device if the mouthpiece, tubing, or filter becomes damaged or visibly soiled.
