Transport wheelchairs are designed to be pushed by a caregiver rather than self-propelled by the user — and the Drive Medical Transport Chair delivers the lightweight, compact design that makes caregiver-assisted transport practical in any setting. The aluminum frame weighs only 19 lbs, making it easy to load into a vehicle, maneuver through doorways, and handle during daily use. Composite 8" wheels are lightweight and maintenance-free, and the aluminum cast back release hinge allows the back to fold down for compact storage and transport. Swing-away footrests, padded armrests, and nylon upholstery provide comfort during use, and standard rear wheel locks keep the chair stationary when needed. 19" seat width. Black frame and upholstery. 300 lb weight capacity. Limited lifetime warranty.
What is the difference between a transport wheelchair and a standard wheelchair?
A standard wheelchair has large rear wheels that the user can grip and push to self-propel. A transport wheelchair has small rear wheels — typically 8" — that are not designed for self-propulsion. Transport wheelchairs are intended to be pushed by a caregiver and are generally lighter, more compact, and easier to fold and transport in a vehicle than standard wheelchairs. They are the appropriate choice when the user will always have a caregiver available to push the chair and does not need the ability to self-propel.
How do the swing-away footrests work?
The swing-away footrests pivot outward and away from the front of the wheelchair, clearing the footrest area completely for transfers. This allows the user to slide forward to the edge of the seat and stand up, or allows a caregiver to assist with a transfer, without the footrests blocking the movement. When the user is seated and ready to be transported, the footrests swing back into position to support the feet. Swing-away footrests are the standard configuration for transport wheelchairs used in clinical and home care settings.
How compact does this chair fold for storage and transport?
The chair folds to a closed width of 9", which is compact enough to fit in most standard vehicle trunks and back seats. The aluminum cast back release hinge allows the back to fold down as well, further reducing the overall profile for storage. At 19 lbs, the chair is light enough for most caregivers to lift into a vehicle without assistance. Confirm the folded dimensions against your vehicle's trunk or storage space before ordering if space is a primary concern.
What is the seat width and how do I know if 19" is the right size?
The seat width is 19". To determine the appropriate seat width, measure the user's hip width at the widest point while seated and add approximately 1" to 2" on each side for comfort — a total of 2" to 4" wider than the hip measurement. A seat that is too narrow will be uncomfortable and may restrict circulation, while a seat that is too wide reduces lateral support and makes self-transfer more difficult. If the 19" seat is too wide or too narrow, this model is also available in a 17" seat width configuration.
